My initial term in Nagoya

Nagoya is the fourth largest city in the country by population, located between Tokyo and Osaka, and is considered to be one of the most unreached areas in Japan with 1 church for every 23,000 people. Christ Bible Institute is located at the crossroads of this strategic location for ministry - being just a few minutes away from one of the world’s largest train stations, it is a symbolic gateway for the Gospel to spread throughout Japan and is also a more literal gateway to ministry opportunities. I am excited to be welcomed as part of the next generation of ministry workers as part of a long history of missionaries to this country. 

CBI is an equipping ministry that trains Japanese Christians who are entering into ministry in Japan and beyond. They also support the spiritual development of Japanese Christians to be a faithful witness at home and in their communities. CBI accomplishes this through four main focus areas:

Christ Bible Seminary, an evangelical seminary in the reformed tradition

Joy of Japan Center, focused on church planting and revitalization

CBI Counseling, which provides Christian counseling training and resources in Japan

CBI Media and CBI Press, which both create, translate, and share Christian digital and print resources

In my first year of the residency, I will serve directly at CBI as an intern. Their internship model consists of 3 components: ministry, where I will be involved with outreach and discipleship through a local church and other partnership opportunities; muscle, where I will test and develop my gifts through a service project that supports the larger ministries of CBI; and mentoring, where I will receive regular mentoring as part of a cohort or with an assigned mentor. I will also be a part-time language student. In the second year of my residency, I will focus on discerning and preparing for my future calling and will transition to full-time language study. During this time, I hope to further explore and test interests in the arts with Gallery Nani, mercy and hospitality, lay counseling, and friendship with women.
